Hello again, Tara Musich here, teacher of American English. Today, we are going to talk about how to choose the right teacher for you, whether it be an online teacher or a live teacher, like face to face, a live face to face teacher. Most of us educators will sit here and try to tell you why you should choose me or this other person to teach you. So today I am going to give you a few tips on how to choose a teacher that is suitable to you and your personality.
So, there are three, three tips, three things that I think that are important when choosing a teacher, and the first one may sound a little funny, but I really think that it’s important. The first one is the person’s voice, the teacher’s voice. When you are learning a foreign language your teacher’s voice is very important. It is the voice that you are imitating. It is the voice that you should want to sound like. So that’s why I think that this is very important. It needs to be appealing to your ears, you should like it! It should be something you want to try to sound like. So, first and foremost the voice of your teacher I think is very important when you’re trying to work on speaking skills and pronunciation skills. Sounding good is always great, you know, in any language that we are learning.
The second thing that I think is very important when choosing a teacher to teach you English is that the teacher…it is important that the teacher be adaptable and flexible to your needs. What do I mean by that? I mean when you sit down with the teacher they should be able, after an hour with you at most, they should be able to see what your strengthens and weaknesses are and see what they can work on with you, what you are excelling at, what you do really well with. They should be able to give you this kind of feedback and then, most importantly, they create lessons that are specifically made for you and what you need in your English. So, it is important that they don’t stay with one teaching style because not all students learn in one, one way. I feel that’s very important for the student and for the teacher when learning a foreign language.
Finally, I think the third thing that’s so important when choosing a teacher is the energy level. What do I mean by that? I mean that the energy level between the teacher and the student should be in sync. If your teacher isn’t giving you the attention that you need, isn’t focusing on the right things, doesn’t seem interested in your goals, then it’s time to “speak up” – as we say, that means “say something”!! – either to your teacher or to the administrator of the school that your teacher works with, something like that, to make sure you get the class that you deserve. If this doesn’t work, then you know, there’s always the option of finding a teacher that’s more suitable to your personality, to your energy level, and to your needs as a student of English as a second language.
I hope that this video helped you out today with how to choose a suitable online teacher for your English language learning.
